Frequently asked questions

What's a property tax exemption?
It’s a discount on your property tax bill. If you qualify and sign up, the county leaves out part of your home’s value when it figures your tax — so you pay less, every year.

More are on the way — like the breaks for homeowners and seniors. We’re double-checking each one before we post it, so the numbers you see are right.

Can someone file these for me?
Not the homestead ones — and that’s the law, not us being difficult. You have to sign that this is the home you live in, under oath, and no one can do that for you. What we can do is tell you which ones fit your home and exactly what to bring, so filing takes a few minutes.
How do I file?
Two ways, and both are free with the county. Online at fultonassessor.org is fastest — you can do it from home. Or in person at any Fulton County Board of Assessors office (the main one is 235 Peachtree St NE, Suite 1400, in Atlanta — there are six across the county). Have your Georgia ID and Social Security number handy and it takes just a few minutes. Our step-by-step Fulton guide walks you through the whole thing.
When do I file?
File by April 1 and it counts for this year. File later and it usually counts for next year — with one Fulton twist: if you file within 45 days of getting your yearly assessment notice, it still counts for this year (as long as you owned and lived in the home on or before January 1).
Are some breaks automatic?
Yes. Fulton and the State of Georgia also cap how much your home’s taxable value can go up each year. You don’t apply for those — the county just gives you the better deal. They’re not in the numbers above, but they’re quietly helping you.
Where do your numbers come from?

Every number here comes straight from the county and the State of Georgia — not our guesses. They come from the Fulton County 2026 Homestead Exemption Guide, Georgia tax law, and the federal limit for veterans. We last checked them on June 10, 2026.
